Introducing Me...
Hello everyone, and welcome to my blog, where I will be recounting my experiences during the UNA-NYC Summer Scholars fellowship. This summer I will be working with the UNFPA Youth Engagement team in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Before I get into the details of what I’m doing here in South Africa, let me tell you a bit about myself. I am currently a graduate student of International Affairs, at the City University of New York’s - Colin Powell School of Civic and Global Leadership. I’m a British-Trinidadian international student who’s been pursuing an education in New York City, an assemblage of culture, diversity and global affairs.
For many, defining their goals and path in life can prove to be a significant challenge, and rightfully so. Finding your place in this world is a daunting task and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Fortunately, my personal passions, academic pursuits, and professional interests intersect beautifully, creating a path that feels like a yellow brick road illuminated by celestial light, guiding my way forward. In this fractured world, dedicating myself to the the implementation of universal human rights, global equity and justice feels like both a responsibility, and of course a privilege as I am in a position to do so.
Being a part of the UNA-NYC Summer Scholars fellowship is a pivotal part of my journey. I’ve been given the unique opportunity to directly contribute to work focused on empowering young people to engage in positive change for themselves and their communities, within an organization that prioritises the rights and well-being of women, girls and young people. (In the next post I will be going into a detailed account of the UNFPA, their work, and the role I will be taking on at my stay here.)
Being in Johannesburg for the summer (their winter), I look forward to immersing myself in South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry, studying the country’s deep history and learning from their path to liberation from Apartheid. (See post on Lilliesleaf Farm, the former secret operation hub of the ANC.) I’m looking forward to further safely exploring the city, connecting with its people and learning about life through other’s eyes.
As I embark on this journey, I invite you to follow along through this blog. I will be sharing my adventures and experiences, what I learn about South African culture, and most importantly reflections on my work with the UNFPA. I hope you find my writing engaging and can share in the inspiration these experiences will indubitably provide me with.
Thanks for reading, and don’t hesitate to reach out to ask me questions on my time here in Johannesburg!
